How to use the garden lock

7/20/2014

There's been some confusion recently about how to properly lock up the garden gate with our combo padlock, so our handy treasurer, Otis, took a few pictures showing proper locking procedure.

Key step: Insert shackle from the rear

After unlocking the lock from where it was left on the gate, take the shackle and insert it from back to front through the latch holes.

The key here is that the lock tilts out toward the user, like above. This will ensure that you can see the combo when you're locking up and the next person to use the lock will be able to see the combo to unlock it again.

Just a couple reminders about locking the garden:

  • Please do not walk away with the lock, even if you think you are the only one in the garden or are only going to be there "for a few minutes." Instead lock the padlock to the chain link fence or to the bottom latch hole (and remember to scramble the code; I have seen random passersby play with the lock and an unlocked lock could walk off).
  • Please double check that you are the last person in the garden when you are locking up. We've had a few incidents where folks have gotten locked in.
  • Please do not give the garden code to anyone not associated with the garden. This includes family, friends, and the family dog.

Work day pictureCommunications Director Gretchen working the compactor.
We successfully opened the 2014 season with our Annual Spring Clean Up Day. Gardeners in attendance helped with a variety of tasks around the garden:

  • We dug out a new planting strip on the eastern end of the garden where we will add 6 new fruit trees to our growing orchard.
  • We moved and compacted gravel to help with rat abatement and prevent path corrosion during heavy rains.
  • We planted new berries and vines in communal areas.
  • We added hardware cloth around the outside fence to help with rat abatement.
  • We weeded and picked up trash.
  • Finally, we had a small meeting where we discussed the changes to the bylaws and voted on the changes. You can see our new bylaws here.

The date for our Mandatory Spring Meeting is set for April 12th at 10am. We'll be installing a new planting strip, doing some rat abatement, and having a garden meeting to discuss changes to our bylaws. We will also be giving out this year's code to the combo lock. If you can't make it, please make alternate arrangements with us via email.
